O conceito de liberdade em Locke e Mill
Résumé
O objetivo do artigo é realizar uma análise comparativa entre as ideias de liberdade elaboradas por John Locke e John Stuart Mill. A tese que buscaremos defender é a de que o modo como Locke pensou a liberdade exerceu influência sobre a filosofia de Mill. A fim de justifica-la, iremos analisar, primeiro, o conceito de liberdade defendido por Locke. Para tanto, reconstruiremos sucintamente os apontamentos sobre a liberdade traçados nas obras Segundo tratado sobre o governo civil (1689) e Ensaio sobre o entendimento humano (1690). Em seguida, leremos um escrito de juventude de Mill onde o autor apresenta sua interpretação do pensamento de Locke e elogia a teoria dos direitos inalienáveis presente no Segundo tratado. Feito isto, veremos de que maneira o pensamento político de Locke reverberou na doutrina da liberdade exposta por Mill em Sobre a liberdade (1859). Nossa conclusão será a de que o conceito de liberdade em Mill possui fortes semelhanças com a ideia de liberdade apresentada por Locke.
